INTRODUCTION:

Course Code: 5M3782

This full-time QQI Healthcare Support Course is designed to prepare students to work competently, safely and effectively as a Healthcare Assistant in a variety of settings such as nursing homes, hospitals and home help support. This course is unique in that Kinsale Campus is the only centre offering a fully accredited Dementia Care Module that underpins this course.

The course has also been highlighted at National level at a forum on the future of dementia care. The course is structured to provide students with a high standard of training and assessment leading to a recognised qualification for those pursuing a career in the Health Care Sector. It is also a preparatory course designed for students who intend to pursue further training in Health, Social and Community Care in Institutes of Technology and Universities.

Students spend four days per week in campus-based training and 150 hours on work experience, which brings together healthcare theory and practice in a holistic manner.

Kinsale Campus, Healthcare Support / Caring for the elderly (Level 5)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCA, Healthcare QQI level 4, or equivalent. For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • All applicants will be required to attend an interview.

START DATE:

September 2025.

CERTIFICATION:

  • QQI Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support / Caring for the Elderly (5M4339).

COURSE CONTENT:

The following subjects may be offered:

Care Skills - 5N2770

This module focuses on the clinical skills required in clinical, residential and homecare settings. Students will learn to deliver person centred care based on the activities of daily living model whilst ensuring the highest standard of infection prevent and control. Students will also gain knowledge in relation to multiple conditions e.g. Parkinsons, Stroke, Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes etc.

Care Support - 5N0758

This module focuses on supporting the client in variety of environments highlighting the need for social and clinical reflection to support ‘best practice’. The student will explore all support services and the Multi-Disciplinary Team including the Role of the Healthcare Support Worker in relation to supporting the client. HIQA will be explored in dept ensuring comprehensive knowledge on Standards of Care within the clinical setting. Students will also get the opportunity to develop and deliver a care support activity as part in a residential setting.

Safety & Health at Work - 5N1794

This module equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health and good practice which is necessary for the delivery of quality healthcare in a work environment. Students cover work related hazards, carry out risk assessments and become aware of the necessary regulations in the workplace for both the employee and the employer.

Nutrition - 5N2006

This module covers the nutritional value of food, the composition of food and the different nutritional requirements of different age groups and dietary requirements. Menu planning and food additives are also included.

Care of Older Person - 5N2706

Students taking this module focus on care in relation to the Older Person highlighting clinical, medical and social issues that impact the older person and care delivery. Students will learn to encourage independence and play an active role in the rehabilitation of the older person in clinical and social and home settings. Students will also gain an in-depth knowledge in relation to conditions that affect older people including Parkinsons, Stroke, Osteoporosis, Dementia, COPD, Diabetes etc.

Infection Prevention & Control - 5N3734

Students taking this module will examine all aspects of Infection control. They will become proficient in clinical handwashing and correct use of PPE as well as being able to recognise and deal with potential hazards in the clinical setting. Students will become proficient in preventing infection when caring for patients and gain an in-depth knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections and how to prevent against them.

Communications - 5N0690

This module covers current issues in communication technology, legislation and communication etiquette. Communication both written, verbal and nonverbal are explored in personal and work-related settings to include one to one and group interactions both formal and informal. Students are assessed both in a collection of work and skill demonstrations.

Work Experience - 5N1356

This module provides the learner with the relevant knowledge, competence and skills to prepare for work placement in a registered health care setting where 150 hours are required to be completed by the learner. The workplace learning works in tandem with classroom-based learning.

 

Addtional Certificaton in Dementia Awareness with City and Guilds - 3565-21

This is an additional qualification for all students from City and Guilds. Students will receive certification on completion of this course.

Dementia is explored in relation to definitions and types, causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Care of the individual with dementia is examined in detail on a practical level to ensure individual care planning, delivery of care and continuous evaluation. Students get to complete assignments which reinforces learning based around the above topics. This is a very sought-after qualification by both students and employers alike as Dementia becomes more prevalent in our society.

THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO:

  • Develop personal and interpersonal qualities necessary for work in a range of healthcare environments.
  • Be capable of creating and maintaining appropriate relationships with the client, their family and other healthcare professionals.
  • Acquire specialist knowledge in Dementia Care.

Kinsale Campus is a fantastic educational opportunity to work in a healthcare area. The course is very positive with lots of encouragement and support. The Campus is a community within a community. There are lots of opportunities for me when I finish the course.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

On completion of this course students will be eligible for employment in a variety of care settings, including: care homes, working for agencies and in private homes.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Participants will be required to undertake 150 hours of work placement in a suitable environment. The College will assist participants in identifying suitable placements.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Students who successfully complete this course will be awarded:

  • QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support Award.
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Dementia Awareness.
  • Certificate in Patient Moving and Handling.
  • Pre-hospital emergency care council (PHECC) training.
  • Students have the opportunity to complete a stroke training and awareness certificate.
