UDL (Universal Design for Learning)
Take the first step!
What is UDL?
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.
Active Inclusion Network:
Kinsale Campus has a long proud tradition of UDL. Several staff members were pilot members of the Active Inclusion Network, which was established by CETB and AHEAD in 2017.
Subsequently the Active Inclusion Network – Cork Education and Training Board Pilot Project for Staff Development was launched, which charted the journey of the Active Inclusion Network, a pilot to support staff working in PLC colleges within Cork Education and Training Board by creating reflective spaces for staff to explore Universal Design for Learning as a positive solution to including a diverse range of students in their centres.
Their work also led to the development of an Active Inclusion Officer and team within Cork ETB.
UDL at Kinsale Campus:
Kinsale Campus is synonymous with UDL and fostering inclusion, having won a national award in 2019 with AHEAD/DCU for our inclusive Teaching and Learning Practices. At least 3/4 of our staff have participated in training for UDL, and work from a student centered approach, using innovative teaching practices, to create an inclusive, supportive environment for all learners. We were at the forefront of the Active Inclusion Network, which has now rolled out nationwide.
The teaching staff at Kinsale Campus go above and beyond to support students, especially those who are disadvantaged &/or have specific learning needs. By adopting and advocating for a UDL approach within the college, they have created a supportive and inclusive environment for all learners. They have given individuals opportunities and confidence to grow beyond what they thought they were ever capable of.
Every member of the teaching staff has supported and advocated for a student centered approach. We are a small campus, but we think big when it comes to teaching and learning. Our assessment process has been commended by QA external validators for its innovative, inclusive approach. This allows all our students to have a fair and equal chance at success. It also allows our teachers to think outside the box and be creative in their teaching methods.
