INTRODUCTION:

Course Code:5M3782

This course is for you if you are a people person with a patient, kind nature and would like to take on the roles and responsibilities associated with caring for people with additional challenges living in our community. This course will enable you to acquire competencies and skills, to care for someone with a person-centred approach ensuring that empathy, dignity, respect, and confidentiality are fundamental to best practice. If you want to bring a smile to others, enhance the quality of life and facilitate positive change then this is the course for you.

COURSE CONTENT:

The following subjects may be offered:

Infection Prevention and Control (5N3734)

Students taking this module will examine all aspects of Infection control. They will become proficient in clinical handwashing and correct use of PPE as well as being able to recognise and deal with potential hazards in the clinical setting. Students will become proficient in preventing infection when caring for patients and gain an in-depth knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections and how to prevent against them.

Care Support (5N0758)

This module focuses on supporting the client in variety of environments highlighting the need for social and clinical reflection to support ‘best practice’. The student will explore all support services and the Multi-Disciplinary Team including the Role of the Healthcare Support Worker in relation to supporting the client. HIQA will be explored in dept ensuring comprehensive knowledge on Standards of Care within the clinical setting. Students will also get the opportunity to develop and deliver a care support activity as part in a residential setting.

Work Experience (5N1356)

This module provides the learner with the relevant knowledge, competence and skills to prepare for work placement in a registered health care setting where 150 hours are required to be completed by the learner. The workplace learning works in tandem with classroom-based learning.

Communications (5N0690)

This module covers current issues in communication technology, legislation and communication etiquette. Communication both written, verbal and nonverbal are explored in personal and work-related settings to include one to one and group interactions both formal and informal. Students are assessed both in a collection of work and skill demonstrations.

Nutrition (5N2006)

This module covers the nutritional value of food, the composition of food and the different nutritional requirements of different age groups and dietary requirements. Menu planning and food additives are also included.

Family Support Skills (5N3738)

The family support module gives the learner an in-depth knowledge of the structure of the HSE and the role of the Family Support Worker within it. It explores legislation to support families to access services. The student will develop a range of skills to enhance teamwork within a family support context and develop effective leadership and advocacy skills. Students will acquire knowledge and develop skills with an overall competence and confidence to work in the provision of holistic care in a variety of health care settings. A work placement experience is a key element of the course and contributes to the students learning and professional development.

Person Centred focus to Disability (5N1728)

In this module the student focuses on Person Centred Planning/Focus in relation to persons living with a disability. The student will explore all areas of disability including legislation and the application of holistic person-centred planning. Students will learn to assess, plan and communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, as well as implementing and evaluating person-centred plans.

Equality and Disability (5N1273)

This module provides the learner with the essential skills and knowledge to challenge personal and / or social behaviour that discriminates against people with disabilities. This module increases the learner’s awareness of legislation and the importance of equality for all in society.
